Honda SUV Lineup · Saskatchewan
HR-V, CR-V, Passport, and Pilot -- side-by-side specs, pricing, real-world use cases, and honest recommendations from the team at Moose Jaw Honda. Built for Saskatchewan winters, gravel highways, and family life.
Honda sells four SUVs in Canada -- HR-V (subcompact, 5 seats, from ~$32K), CR-V (compact, 5 seats, from ~$36K, hybrid available), Passport (mid-size 5-seat off-road/rural, from ~$48K), and Pilot (mid-size 8-seat family, from ~$54K). For most Moose Jaw and southern Saskatchewan buyers the CR-V is the default best fit -- Canada's top-selling SUV, real AWD, good winter feature package, and strong resale. Choose HR-V for a smaller/cheaper daily driver; Passport if you drive gravel or need real off-pavement capability; Pilot if you need three rows for kids, hockey gear, and long highway trips. Who it's for: First-time SUV buyers, singles and couples, empty-nesters downsizing from a bigger vehicle, and drivers who want SUV visibility and cargo without SUV pricing. HR-V is our entry point to the Honda SUV lineup.
What you get: 2.0L four-cylinder (158 hp), FWD standard or AWD available, standard Honda Sensing safety suite, standard block heater, 691 L of cargo behind the second row, Honda's Magic Seat second-row folding system, and combined fuel economy around 7.8 L/100 km.
Saskatchewan fit: Solid. AWD versions handle Moose Jaw winters well -- the CVT and 2.0L engine aren't turbocharged, so cold-start behaviour is predictable. Not as capable in deep snow or on rough gravel as the CR-V or Passport, but for city driving and paved-highway commuting between Moose Jaw and Regina it's plenty of vehicle.
Where it falls short: Not rated for towing. Less cargo than CR-V. Smaller engine feels stretched with a full load on the Trans-Canada. Second-row space is tight for tall passengers.
Best for
Who it's for: The largest single group of Honda SUV buyers in Canada. Small families, couples with active weekend lives, retirees who want space and comfort, professionals who commute daily and haul kids or gear on weekends. If you're not sure which Honda SUV to pick, start with the CR-V.
What you get: 1.5L turbo (190 hp) or 2.0L hybrid (204 hp combined), AWD standard on most trims (Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control), Honda Sensing, standard block heater, remote start standard on Sport trims and up, heated seats standard on Sport, 1,113 L of cargo behind the second row, 1,500 lb tow rating. Hybrid variant delivers ~6.4 L/100 km combined -- best-in-class for a non-plug-in AWD compact SUV.
Saskatchewan fit: Excellent. This is the default winter SUV for southern Saskatchewan. The Real Time AWD system engages predictively when it senses wheel slip, and the CR-V's ride height, mass, and traction package handle Moose Jaw winters and southern SK gravel with confidence. Hybrid version is even better in slippery conditions -- the electric motor delivers instant, smooth torque without wheel spin.
Where it falls short: Not built for serious off-road or heavy towing (get a Passport or Pilot). Pricing on higher trims (Touring Hybrid) approaches Passport territory.
Best for
Who it's for: Rural drivers, farm and ranch owners, weekend adventurers, buyers who tow a trailer regularly, and anyone who spends real time on gravel roads. The Passport is the most off-road-capable Honda SUV.
What you get: 3.5L V6 (285 hp) with 10-speed automatic, standard i-VTM4 AWD (torque-vectoring rear differential -- smarter than most compact-SUV AWD systems), 209 mm of ground clearance, 5,000 lb tow rating, standard Honda Sensing, standard heated seats and steering wheel, standard remote start, 1,430 L of cargo behind the second row (biggest of any 2-row Honda SUV). The 2026 Passport TrailSport trim adds skid plates, all-terrain tires, and off-road-tuned suspension.
Saskatchewan fit: The right pick if you drive rural gravel daily, tow a trailer or camper, or need to move through deep snow on side roads. i-VTM4 sends up to 70% of engine torque to the rear axle and can split that torque 100% to either rear wheel -- real capability, not marketing. The V6 handles the Trans-Canada with authority.
Where it falls short: Only 2 rows / 5 seats -- not a family hauler if you need to move 6+ people. Fuel economy is 11.7 L/100 km combined vs 8.4 for CR-V -- meaningful over 25,000 km/year. Higher starting price than CR-V.
Best for
Who it's for: Larger families (3+ kids), families with kids' sports gear that fills a vehicle (hockey bags, box lacrosse gear, wakeboards), families who take long highway road trips, and blended families or grandparents who need to move seven people at once.
What you get: 3.5L V6 (285 hp) with 10-speed automatic, i-VTM4 AWD available, 7 or 8 seats depending on trim (second-row captain's chairs available on higher trims), 5,000 lb tow rating, standard Honda Sensing, standard heated seats and steering wheel on Sport +, standard remote start on most trims. Cargo behind 3rd row is 524 L; behind 2nd row 1,583 L; behind 1st row 3,092 L. TrailSport trim adds off-road capability.
Saskatchewan fit: Excellent for families. Winter capability is strong with i-VTM4 AWD. Three-row layout means you're not making trade-offs when you need to move kids and friends. Long-distance comfort on the Trans-Canada is genuinely good -- Pilot is one of the more comfortable non-luxury family SUVs on the market.
Where it falls short: Big vehicle for tight parking (Moose Jaw downtown / Regina Cornwall Centre lots). Fuel economy at 10.9 L/100 km combined is the price of a V6. Higher starting price than CR-V -- for a small family, Pilot is more vehicle than you need.
Best for
| Your situation | Recommended Honda SUV | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Single or couple, daily commuter, tight budget | HR-V | Right-sized, low fuel cost, cheapest entry point to the Honda SUV lineup. |
| Small family, 1-2 kids, urban / suburban Moose Jaw | CR-V | Enough cargo, AWD standard, Honda Sensing, right size for daycare / school runs and weekend outings. |
| Small family, wants best fuel economy without giving up AWD | CR-V Hybrid | ~6.4 L/100 km combined with AWD -- best-in-class efficiency for a non-plug-in compact SUV. |
| Rural, farm, or ranch driver -- gravel roads daily | Passport | Real off-road capability, 209 mm ground clearance, i-VTM4 AWD, 5,000 lb towing. |
| Regular trailer or camper towing | Passport or Pilot | Both rated 5,000 lb. Choose Passport for solo / couple use, Pilot for family towing. |
| Family with 3+ kids or hockey / box lacrosse team gear | Pilot | Third row + 1,583 L behind 2nd row = the only Honda that solves the "kids and gear" problem. |
| Long-distance highway commuter (Moose Jaw ↔ Regina, or further) | CR-V or Pilot | CR-V for solo commutes; Pilot if you regularly haul family on the same route. |
| First-time SUV buyer moving up from a sedan | HR-V or CR-V | Both are approachable in size; CR-V gives more room to grow into. |
All four Honda SUVs share the same core winter package -- standard block heater, standard Honda Sensing (which includes adaptive cruise, collision mitigation, and lane-keeping that work in snow within reason), and available or standard heated seats and steering wheel. Where they differ meaningfully is AWD system, ground clearance, and weight.
Bottom line: for on-pavement Moose Jaw / Regina / Trans-Canada winter driving, CR-V is more than enough. For rural gravel and deep-snow side roads, Passport pulls ahead. Full winter feature breakdown is in our Best SUVs for Winter Driving in Saskatchewan guide.
CR-V -- small-family owner (Moose Jaw):
"We test-drove three brands. The CR-V won because of how it drove on Highway 1 with a kid in the back -- quiet, comfortable, and the Honda Sensing stuff genuinely helped on the drive back to Regina. Winter's been a non-issue."
Passport -- farmer / gravel commuter:
"I drive 40 km of gravel every day to the section. The Passport handles it -- the AWD is real, not marketing. I tow a stock trailer to Weyburn most weekends. It's the truck replacement I didn't know I wanted."
HR-V -- first-time SUV buyer:
"Wanted more space than a Civic but couldn't justify CR-V money. HR-V is right-sized -- I park it downtown, it fits my dog's crate, and it gets me to my folks' place in Assiniboia without complaint."
Pilot -- three-kid family:
"We had a CR-V before. It was great for two kids and average gear. Third kid changed everything -- hockey bags, three car seats, weekend gear. Pilot solved every problem the CR-V couldn't. Wish we'd bought it a year sooner."
